Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

Pulmonary function testing helps assess how well the lungs move air and may be used to evaluate symptoms and respiratory conditions when clinically appropriate.

About this condition

Understanding Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

Pulmonary function testing includes tests such as spirometry and, in selected patients, oscillometry. These tests provide complementary information about airflow and respiratory mechanics and are interpreted together with symptoms, examination and other clinical findings.

Spirometry

Spirometry is a common pulmonary function test that measures how much air a person can exhale and how quickly. It can help assess airflow obstruction and is often used when evaluating symptoms such as persistent cough, wheeze or breathlessness. The test requires active breathing manoeuvres and the technician provides instructions throughout.

Impulse Oscillometry / FOT

Impulse oscillometry is a non-invasive pulmonary function test that uses small pressure waves while the patient breathes normally through a mouthpiece. The test measures respiratory resistance and reactance, providing information about how easily air moves through the airways and how the lungs and chest system respond to the applied oscillations. Because it requires only quiet breathing rather than repeated forceful blows, it can be useful in selected children and adults who have difficulty performing conventional spirometry.

How the results are used

A pulmonary function test result is interpreted in the context of the patient’s symptoms, clinical examination, medical history and other investigations. The appropriate test and interpretation depend on the individual clinical situation.

What may be assessed

  • Spirometry (PFT) measures how much air a person can breathe out and how quickly, helping assess airflow limitation and lung volumes where indicated
  • Oscillometry / Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) uses small pressure oscillations to assess respiratory mechanics and airway resistance, and may be useful when conventional spirometry is difficult
  • Test preparation and instructions are explained before testing, with the exact protocol based on the clinical question
  • Results are interpreted together with symptoms, examination and other investigations rather than in isolation
